World of Warcraft: The Plague

I don’t play Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, but I hear that the players are experiencing a small crisis, and Blizzard is “in a panic to keep things under control”. Apparently, Hakkar (the “god of blood”) likes to infect all of his challengers with a highly fatal plague. However, the players did not count on the possibility that this plague might be both highly fatal and highly contagious. “[Game Masters] have started to quarantine players in an effort to control the spreading, but players keep leaving the quarantine areas. Unless you’re above level 50, you more or less immediately fall over dead from the disease.”

  1. I was unclear on the Warcraft concept but I brought the plague up at the dinner table anyway. My teenagers found it 1) shocking that no one has created a quest for the cure yet, and 2) shocking that I knew about it at all. Thanks!

  2. I’m glad that I could post something of interest for your dinner table conversation. ^_^ Do your teenagers play World of Warcraft? I have given some thought to signing up, but it just looks like it would take too much time out of the day.

  3. Alas, they don’t have enough bucks or time to play internet games and are limited to reading about it in their gamer magazines.

They’ve got their mother’s potential for a serious game addiction, however—I saw it in their eyes when I brought up the plague. I had to go through the Dark Castle 12-Step Program in the late 80s, fell off the wagon in the 90s and only escaped the habit when my Mac Plus hard drive crashed for good.

Signing up for Warcraft just might send all of us into the abyss.

  4. Beware of the abyss. The only way to safely escape it is when you successfully complete a game, but World of Warcraft is a game which has been specifically designed to have no end.
