Smultron has been updated to v1.2. This update improves speed and syntax coloring. The release notes are available here. “Smultron is an open-source text editor written in Cocoa for Mac OS X Panther with many of the features that you might need.”

How deos it rate compared to the likes of Textwrangler?
Personally, I never liked TextWrangler and feel that Smultron is a superior product.
